Our History in Composite Tank Trailer Manufacturing

Our long history dates back to California in the 1970s, when Poly-Coat Systems operated as an FRP lining company. At this time, the company applied FRP linings to equipment used in power plants and mining operations, where corrosion resistance was incredibly important. By the 1980s we had started applying this experience to the truck transport industry, lining transport tanks with FRP to protect them when hauling corrosive materials.

Having already adapted our composite expertise from power plants to transport, we took the next step and began building tanks entirely from composite material. By 2001, that shift made us the first U.S. manufacturer of all-composite 407/412 tank trailers. Two years later we formally incorporated our Texas business, which our founder still owns today.

Composite Tank Production at Our Texas Facility

Poly-Coat Systems manufactures its FRP tanks at the company’s facility in the Greater Houston metropolitan area. Our Texas location supports tank production, trailer assembly and repair services for customers across the country.

Since entering all-composite tank trailer manufacturing in 2001, we’ve produced FRP tank trailers ranging from truck mounts and vacuum units to oilfield service, short-wheelbase and standard 407/412 configurations. To keep up with customer demand we’ve expanded our Texas facility to provide more space for trailer assembly and production.

How We Build an FRP Tank

Are you curious about how we build a tank that can safely carry corrosive chemicals for decades of use? Our process includes several key stages.

  • A chemical-resistant lining is built first, using fiberglass fabric saturated with resin that is selected for the specific chemical the tank will carry.
  • Two liner halves are joined to form the complete tank shell.
  • Structural layers are added, including wound fiberglass filaments and a honeycomb core to resist pressure, impact and bending.
  • Outlets, manways and fittings are integrated and sealed by hand for a watertight finish.
  • Each tank is checked for proper cure and quality before final finishing.

Every stage of this process happens at our facility in Texas. Refined over more than 20 years, it’s how we manufacture top-quality products for applications where durability and safety are the priority.

Why Businesses Choose Our FRP Tank Trailers

FRP tanks provide clear advantages over traditional steel tankers. Our customers include transportation providers, trucking companies, chemical manufacturers and chemical distributors, along with bleach and acid manufacturers that depend on equipment built to handle corrosive materials. Our FRP tanks bring you benefits like the following.

  • Resistant to corrosion on both the inside and outside of the tank barrel.
  • Roughly one-fifth lighter than comparable steel tankers.
  • Lower maintenance needs and reduced operating costs.
  • Engineered to perform for up to 30 years with proper maintenance.

Our FRP tank trailer inventory includes FRP stock tank trailers, vacuum tank trailers, food-grade tank trailers and barrel-only tanks, each one built around the customer’s specific application. A barrel-only tank, for example, allows another manufacturer to pair our composite barrel with their own chassis, piping and equipment. Depending on the application, we adjust the tank’s construction to fit the material it carries and the equipment it’s installed on. This is the standard behind every tank we build.
